Summer is coming up. Do you have any plans? Most people like to have a summer vacation when the weather is nice and warm. If you run a business, taking time off can be good for your overall mental health. A little time to relax helps you recover from the mental fatigue and when you return, you’re ready to have at it with all your focus. Before you go, there are some things you should take care of to make sure the business will keep running smoothly in your absence.
1. Make A Written Plan
If you’re running a business, you should know what your business is doing, but do all of your employees know? Before you go on vacation, it would be good to put together a written plan for people to refer to. Your managers should have this on hand so they know what to do, who to go to if something unexpected happens, and how to contact you in an emergency.

It might be a good idea to schedule a meeting to go over any important financial information before you leave. That way, you can get everything taken care of and not have to worry about things while you’re enjoying your time off.
3. Hook Up Your Bookkeeper and Accountant
Sometimes your bookkeeper and accountant are the same person, but that’s not always the case. If these two positions have two separate people doing them, get the two in contact with each other. That way, they can work together on any issues that come up in your absence without having to bother you.
4. Get Ahead on Accounts Payable
There are always things you’ll need to put money into. If you’ve met with your bookkeeper ahead of time as we recommended, you’ll know what they are. The best thing to do at this point is to take care of them ahead of time. If you know some payments are coming up, write up the checks for your bookkeeper to deposit. Submit the payments early if you can.
5. Contend With Construction Season
A lot of construction goes on during the summer. No doubt you’ll be looking ahead to see what construction is going on that might slow your travel down. Well, while you’re at it, why not plan out any construction projects your business needs? If you’ve been needing to remodel part of your building, or add an expansion, why not meet with the appropriate people and get that planned up now? You can have the construction going while you’re on vacation so you come back to see some great progress on it.

Meet with your bookkeeper to see what might need taking care of before you go so you can make sure payments go out on time. Make sure any projects are cleared to handle your absence. Planning ahead is the key to getting ahead. When you get ahead, you won’t have to worry.
